Dayon Griffin (St. Petersburg, Fla.) announced his decision to commit to Louisiana Tech University today. Tech was able to land Griffin despite DePaul University also showing interest and wanting the point guard to visit in a few weeks.
BleedTechBlue.com spoke with Griffin Thursday afternoon to discuss why he chose LA Tech. "I visited this past weekend and I liked what I saw," the 6-4 guard said. "They like to play fast paced and they let their guards play and that's exactly the kind of program I want to be in."
LA Tech signed fellow St. Petersburg native Jacobi Boykins in the fall and the signing of Boykins helped make Griffin's decision even easier. "I'm really good friends with Jacobi," Griffin said. "He and I have talked about how we could shock the world and win Conference USA together." Kenny "Speedy" Smith is also from St. Petersburg and he had words with Griffin also. "He [Speedy] was telling me how much being at [LA Tech] has changed his game and has improved his game," Griffin said. Louisiana Tech has signed Griffin to be Smith's successor at the point guard position.
LA Tech was able to beat a couple of conference foes in FAU and Old Dominion, who had also offered Griffin, as well as USF. Griffin was also hearing from Alabama, DePaul and FIU but ultimately chose to come to Ruston to play for Mike White and the LA Tech Dunkin' Dogs.
