Connections galore when looking at potential Defensive Coordinators
John Thompson and Art Kaufman have both been Defensive Coordinator at Louisiana Tech in the past. Could one of them be in line to return to Ruston? What are the odds that both could end up working together again? This time wherever Kaufman ends up he could return the favor and add Thompson to his staff.
Kaufman recently left Cincinnati and has family in Ruston and is reportedly on Sonny Dykes' shortlist to become Cal's next Defensive Coordinator. Thompson was not retained at Arkansas State after two straight bowl wins as interim head coach. Strangely enough, Thomson and Kaufman have ties going back twenty years and Thompson has something in common with Louisiana Tech Head Coach Skip Holtz.
Thompson was Head Coach at East Carolina. He hired Kaufman to coach the defensive line.
"Art Kaufman brings a great deal of experience to our football program," East Carolina head coach John Thompson told the Associated Press in 2003. "We worked together at Northwestern State for three years and I know for a fact that we've got a big time coach."
Skip Holtz replaced John Thompson as head coach at East Carolina. Thompson has been defensive coordinator at Arkansas, South Carolina, Florida, Ole Miss, and most recently Arkansas State. Kaufman was defensive coordinator the last three years at North Carolina, Texas Tech, and Cincinnati.
Other potential candidates include former South Florida Defensive Coordinator Chris Cosh and former USF and ECU assistant David Blackwell, who is currently the defensive coordinator at Fordham.
The AFCA coaches convention wrapped up on Wednesday. Louisiana Tech has a visit from a 2014 prospect this weekend. Coach Holtz has not announced a timetable to announce a new defensive coordinator. The school announced both Defensive Coordinator Kim Dameron and Linebackers Coach Jeff Koonz were leaving for other jobs on January 10th.
