Tech picks up SEC basketball transfer
RUSTON - Michael White's time at Ole Miss continues to pay dividends as the new Louisiana Tech head coach signed former Rebel Isaiah Massey to a scholarship Wednesday as the 6-foot-8-inch forward will enroll in summer school in Ruston.
"Isaiah is a high level athlete with a motor that never stops," said White. "He's also a high-character young man. He'll be a very good front court player for us, and he is excited about being at Louisiana Tech."
Prior to redshirting at Ole Miss last year, Massey played one year for coach Darwin Floyd at TAAG Academy in Tampa, Florida where he averaged 15.1 points, 12.5 rebounds and 3.4 blocks. ESPN recruiting guru Mike LaPlante named Massey one of the top 20 fifth-year players in the nation prior to him signing with the Rebels.
"Coach White was the main one who recruited me to Ole Miss," Massey said. "While I was at Ole Miss, he was a great coach. He stuck with me, he coached me hard and he understood me. I just think this is a great opportunity for me.
"He understands us as players. He has been through it; he knows what he is doing. And has a good personality, and I just like him as a coach."
Massey played high school basketball for coach Russ Atkins at Union Grove High School in McDonough, Georgia where he averaged 18.3 points and 11.1 rebounds per game as a senior. He also played football for Union Grove.
Originally from Brooklyn, N.Y. before moving to Georgia, Massey signed with Ole Miss over Providence, St. John's, Penn State and South Florida.
Massey is the fourth player that White has added since he was named the Bulldog head coach in late March, joining guard Raheem Appleby, guard Kenneth Smith and forward Michale Kyser. They will join guard Alex Carr who signed during the early period in November.
