Tech works to fix mistakes from scrimmage no. 2

RUSTON - Louisiana Tech worked out in just helmets for approximately 90 minutes Monday afternoon on the Tech Practice Fields, spending most of its 12th spring session correcting mistakes and polishing what was show in Saturday's scrimmage.

It was the first practice in just helmets since the NCAA-mandated helmets only practice in the first two days of spring practice. Monday's session marked the team entering its final week of spring practice, which will wrap up with the T-Day Spring Game on Saturday, April 13 at Joe Aillet Stadium at 1 p.m.

"We have some guys that are bumped, battered and bruised a little bit and it is starting to affect the three-deep and guys getting some reps," head coach Skip Holtz said. "It was a strong mental day where we were able to polish some things up. We got some corrections made from the scrimmage the other day and we got some understanding of how important those turnovers are. It was a productive day and still counts as one so we have to make the most of it even though we weren't in pads."

The offensive and defensive units spent the session refining the parts of the playbook that have already been installed and the coaches showing the players how to correct the mistakes made Saturday on the field.

The team ran around 150 plays in Saturday's scrimmage with the offense struggling in moving the ball, committing 10 turnovers. The players and coaches spent the meeting sessions before Monday's practice reviewing the film from that scrimmage.

"There is something to learn from every play," Holtz said. "We have talked about it before that it is offense versus defense so every play makes somebody happy. It is hard to get a real good evaluation of where you are but what you do get the opportunity to do is evaluate what some of your strengths and weaknesses are. Just trying to get the ball down the field we were not as productive in making plays on the perimeter in one-on-one situations at receiver but you also have to look at that and see that our corners are doing a much better job."

The Bulldogs will spend their final week of spring practice preparing for its third and final scrimmage of the spring, the T-Day Spring Game.

"I need just another good scrimmage," Holtz said of the upcoming T-Day Spring Game. "We need our ones working as a unit on the offensive and defensive side and we need to get some good quality reps. I would love to split it up into two even teams but right now we need to build the camaraderie as much as we can. We need everybody on our offensive line working together, our quarterbacks working behind that first group, and the running backs to build some confidence and trust in each other."
