Tech preparing for T-Day Spring Game

RUSTON - Louisiana Tech held its final practice in full pads Wednesday afternoon at Joe Aillet Stadium before the team wraps up spring practice with the T-Day Spring Game on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Wednesday's session, which was held before any inclement weather hit the Ruston area, featured a lot of team period work. Friday's practice will be in shorts as they polish up this week's work prior to the spring game.

"We got a lot of team work in today," head coach Skip Holtz said. "We ran about 70-80 plays in team with 1s-on-1s and 2s-on-2s which we can't get enough of right now. We could go every day from now until the season doing that but we got a lot of good work in today. We were in pads today and will go in shorts on Friday and then I am excited about the spring game on Saturday."

Saturday's spring game will give the offense the opportunity to rebound after the last scrimmage where they turned the ball over 10 times. The coaching staff has used that performance and the coaches film as strong teaching tools for the offense.

"As much as anything, I think it has been a great teaching tool showing them how important communication is and everybody being on the same page," Holtz said of the last scrimmage. "One guy runs the wrong route and it is seven points for the defense. They have to understand we have to make the defense make the plays, we can't give it to them. There are a lot of communication things, there are a lot of assignment things but we have to do a better job of executing as a unit for sure."

Overall entering the last few sessions of the spring, Holtz said the team has come a long way despite the challenge of a new coaching staff and new playbook as well as the loss of 32 seniors from last year's squad.

"I think it has been a productive spring, I think we have come a long way but I wish we were going into day one tomorrow. I would feel a lot more comfortable as a football coach if we had 15 more days ahead of us. As a new staff coming in, that's part of what you have to overcome and getting guys comfortable with your system on both sides of the ball."
