Tony Johnson (Southwest Miss. C.C.) didn't take the most conventional route to Louisiana Tech's campus but, even so, he will be arriving May 28th and he cannot wait to get to Ruston.

Johnson attended junior college for two years before committing to Louisiana Tech. He has had his name linked with recruiting controversy but he hasn't allowed it to distract him from the task at hand and he's excited to be donning a Bulldogs uniform this fall.

"I was a Bulldog all along. I'm excited about being a part of Louisiana Tech football," Johnson said. "I can't wait to put on the uniform and show everyone that I bleed Tech red and blue."

Johnson, a 2-star junior college recruit at the inside linebacker position, will be joining fellow junior college middle linebacker Nick Thomason, converted safety Mike Schrang and Texas Tech transfer Daniel Cobb in a linebacking corps that has not cemented a starter at the middle linebacker position. Linebacker wasn't originally considered a position of depth for the Bulldogs but, if Johnson and Cobb perform well this summer, the linebacker position battles could be the most intriguing battles to watch.

Johnson, who stands 6-foot-3 inches and weighs 255 pounds, believes that he has an advantage over some of the other linebackers at the position because of his experience in the system.

"We ran the same defense at my high school that [defensive coordinator] [Kim] Dameron runs at Louisiana Tech so I feel like that gives me an advantage because I've already played in that system for 4 years," Johnson told BleedTechBlue.com.

"I watched the defense at the spring game and I was excited about the opportunity to step into that middle linebacker rotation right away."

Johnson said that he works out every day to prepare for a summer workout regimen that he expects will be "crazy."

"I do lots and lots of push-ups," Johnson said. "I work out every day before work and I play a lot of hoops for conditioning. I know when I get to summer two-a-days the workouts will be crazy so I have to arrive in the best shape I can."

There is no doubt in Johnson's mind that he will contribute to the Bulldogs' defense in a big way when the season begins.

"I will be a starter week one against N.C. State," Johnson told BleedTechBlue.com. "I'm not coming to provide depth or be a reserve; I'm coming to be the starting middle linebacker and I feel like I have the tools and the experience to backup that claim."
