Conference USA Power Rankings - week 5


Conference USA football is struggling to put it lightly. East Carolina and Marshall appear to be the best in the conference with ECU looking like the favorite at this point to win the conference.

From Middle Tennessee to FAU, it is anyone's guess how the middle will shake out. Southern Miss and FIU appear to be the bottom dwellers as of now.

1 East Carolina
The Pirates crushed North Carolina 55-31 last week and as a result solified themselves on top of the CUSA power rankings.

2 Marshall
The Thundering Herd were off last week and held on to the second spot.

3 Middle Tennessee
The Blue Raiders stayed at no. 3 even after being demolishedby BYU 37-10. MTSU's ability to hold on to the third spot in the power rankings after such a loss gives a good picture of the state of CUSA football.

4 Rice
The Owls escaped with a victory over FAU last week 18-14.
Last Week: 4
5 Tulane
The Green Wave went on the road and beat another school in North Louisiana last week, this time ULM by the score of 31-14.
Last Week: 8
6 North Texas
The Mean Green were off last week and still moved down in the power rankings. The way Tulane is playing has more to do with that than anything.
Last Week: 5
The Roadrunners were hammered at home by former CUSA member Houston 59-28. Another big loss that should send a team down the rankings but not this season in CUSA.

8 Tulsa
The Golden Hurricane hosted Big 12 member Iowa State last Thursday and were beaten 38-21.
Last Week: 6
9 Louisiana Tech
The Bulldogs lost badly to Army last week in the Cotton Bowl and somehow managed to hold on to the ninth spot in the power rankings. They hit the road to play the no. 10 team this week in UTEP.
Last Week: 9
The Miners put up 42 points and while that would normally be a good indication of a victory, it was not the case for UTEP last week against Colorado State after surrendering 59 points to the home team.

11 FAU
The Owls have given a couple of the top teams in CUSA two scares in back-to-back weeks in Middle Tennessee and Rice but alas have two losses to show for their efforts.

12 UAB
The Blazers were able to keep the game close against Vanderbilt last week -- in the first quarter. The Commodores went on to win 52-24.

13 Southern Miss
The Golden Eagles traveled to Boise to take on the Smurfs I mean the Broncos of Boise State last week and were never with in three points of the Broncos in the second quarter before giving up 50 unanswered points.
Last Week: 13
14 FIU
The Panthers had a bye last week and will have two weeks to prepare for their game in Hattiesburg, Miss. with Southern Miss Saturday as it will be a battle for either team's first victory on the season.
