Week Six Preview

Week six of the college football season brought Louisiana Tech fans to Dallas to participate in the Heart of Dallas Classic. This week takes LA Tech fans to El Paso to the Sun Bowl to take on the Miners of UTEP.

Conference play is now in full swing as every team in the C-USA will battle a conference rival. Two of those matchups will be on national television when the Bulldogs play against the Miners and the Tulsa Golden Hurricane host the Rice Owls.

Here's a look at every game involving C-USA including 2014 league members Western Kentucky and Old Dominion plus Tech's non-conference opponents. Each game includes the Vegas line and my pick to win the game. My record currently stands at 41-15.

Lines are for entertainment purposes only, picks are head-to-head.

Western Kentucky (3-2) at ULM (2-3) - 6:30 p.m., ESPNU, WatchESPN
THE BUZZ: Western Kentucky limited the rushing attack of Navy, which was averaging 399 yards per game, to just 86 yards and the Hilltoppers defeated the Midshipmen by a score of 19-7. The Warhawks lost more than just a game when they were defeated by the Tulane Green Wave Saturday night, the Warhawks also lost Kolton Browning to a season ending quadriceps injury. Without Browning, ULM may not win another game this season.
THE LINE: Western Kentucky by 7
THE PICK: Western Kentucky
UTSA (2-3) at Marshall (2-2) - 1:00 p.m., Not Televised
THE BUZZ: TUTSA was blown out by Houston in week five; the Cougars are a good team but UTSA has been inconsistent this season. Marshall had week five off which gave them an extra week to prepare for the Roadrunners, which is just one more reason why I expect Marshall to win; that and the fact that Marshall is averaging twice as many points as their defense is allowing.
THE LINE: Marshall by 14.5
THE PICK: Marshall
Florida Atlantic (1-4) at UAB (1-3) - 2:00 p.m., Not Televised
THE BUZZ: FAU has already had three conference matchups this season and, with those three matchups, three defeats. FAU did play Rice closely this past week; leading Rice 7-6 in the first quarter before giving up 12 unanswered points and the lead. UAB is not a very good football team. Their only win is against Northwestern State and the Blazers are giving up over 40 points per game.
THE LINE: UAB by 4.5
Rice (2-2) at Tulsa (1-3) - 2:30 p.m., CBS Sports Network
THE BUZZ: Rice narrowly defeated FAU in week five while Tulsa was being blown out by Iowa State, a team that defeated in the Liberty Bowl last year. This matchup means a lot to the western division of C-USA. Can Tulsa right the ship and begin conference play with a win? Will Rice's offense find a way to turn things around? I fully expected this matchup to pair the best two teams of the western division against each other in a matchup that could have C-USA championship implications but this has not been the season I expected.
THE LINE: Tulsa by 3
East Carolina (3-1) at Middle Tennessee (3-2) - 2:30 p.m., Not Televised
THE BUZZ: ECU defeated UNC handily in week five by a score of 55-31. Middle Tennessee was blown out by the BYU Cougars. The Blue Raiders couldn't get anything going on offense and the defense couldn't get off the field. ECU is the class of C-USA and I fully expect the Pirates to come away with their second conference victory.
THE LINE: ECU by 7.5
North Texas (2-2) at Tulane (3-2) - 2:30 p.m., Not Televised
THE BUZZ: North Texas had week five off which gave them an extra week to prepare to travel to New Orleans to take on the Green Wave. Tulane traveled back to North Louisiana to take on the ULM Warhawks. North Louisiana has been good to the Green Wave this year; Tulane has two victories in the north region of the state after they blew out the Warhawks this week by a score of 31-14.
THE PICK: Tulane
Florida International (0-4) at Southern Miss (0-4) - 2:30 p.m., CBS Sports Network
THE BUZZ: Week six is the week Southern Miss fans have been waiting on for a long time. Southern Miss is favored by 17 points in this matchup. The Golden Eagles currently have the longest losing streak in the nation but, if there is one team that is worse than Southern Miss, it is the FIU Panthers.
THE LINE: Southern Miss by 17
THE PICK: Southern Miss
Liberty (3-2) at Old Dominion (3-2) - 5:00 p.m., Not Televised
THE BUZZ: The Old Dominion Monarchs have an explosive offense averaging 50 points per game. In week five they defeated Albany a score of 66-10.
THE PICK: Old Dominion
Louisiana Tech (1-4) at UTEP (1-3) - 6:30 p.m., CBS Sports Network
THE BUZZ: The Bulldogs will travel to El Paso to play in their second conference matchup of the season when they take on the Miners of UTEP. UTEP got caught up in a shootout against Colorado State in week five which they lost by a score of 59-42. LA Tech was unable to stop the rushing attack of the Army Black Knights en route to a 35-16 loss in the Heart of Dallas Classic.
