Tech adds ATH late for 2014 class
During June, most college football programs are already done with their previous signing classes and are already preparing for the upcoming season with summer conditioning. Louisiana Tech is no different, but the Tech coaches found a 2014 prospect in Mississippi that was headed to a Junior College they could not live without.
Tywun Walters (5-11, 215) signed scholarship papers Wednesday with Tech but had previously signed to play at Northwest Mississippi Community College in Mississippi. Tech brought Walters in for an official visit Monday.
My favorite part of the visit was being around the players," Walters told BleedTechBlue.com Wednesday.
Walters says he qualified through the NCAA Clearinghouse back in December but did not have an FBS offer from anyone at that time. He told BleedTechBlue.com today that Tech coaches had a scholarship left and when they found out about him they gave him an offer.
Northwest tried to convince Walters to still come to their school but Walters ultimately decided to come to Ruston.
"[Northwest] did try to get me to stay with them, but I made the best decision for my future."
After watching Walters' highlights and seeing his gaudy high school statistics of 5,870 yards and scoring a total of 268 points it is almost unbelievable the athlete did not have FBS coaches beating down his door. Where Walters will play as a Bulldog is unknown but we project him as an offensive weapon.
"I do believe a few division one schools thought I wasn't going to qualify. Because of that, it makes signing at La. Tech feel even better."
