Tech gets its QB for 2017

Hours after our story about Elijah Walker having Louisiana Tech as his top choice, he committed to the Bulldogs.

When Tech added two quarterbacks to its roster with Jack Abraham and John Randall Belton many thought they may not get one in the 2017 class. When one the quality of Walker is still available, Tech did not have much of a choice. They offered on Sunday and received a commitment on Tuesday.

A FAMILY DECISION

When we spoke to Walker on Tuesday before he committed he told us he needed to talk to his parents before committing. After he got home from practice Tuesday night it was time.

"I just came home from practice and I showed my dad the [BleedTechBlue.com] article," Walker said. "On Monday I told him LA Tech was No. 1. After I showed him the article he said 'son, I think it would be a good idea to commit because they love you and they have a great staff and they really open the offense up and sling the rock. My mom was okay with my commitment also and said she's behind me 100%."

Up until Tech, Walker said the communication from schools has not been great and his father knew he did not feel good about the lack of communication.

"Before Tech offered we talked and he knew I wasn't happy with my recruitment because of the lack of communication with other schools. So when I was at Tech I had to do a good job when I threw for Coach Holtz."

ANALYSIS FROM WOODY WOMMACK

Rivals.com recruiting analyst Woody Wommack likes the fit for Walker at Tech but sees areas for improvement before he can excel at the collegiate level.

"Walker is a guy who had a big junior season, in part because of the pass-heavy offense he played in and the loaded roster high school team posses," Wommack said. "He wasn't asked to a ton in terms of reading defenses, but he was good at putting the ball in nice spots for his wide receivers. I think he could develop into a nice prospect at the next level, but will need some time to work on his mechanics and footwork. Regardless, I like the fit for Louisiana Tech. He's an athletic guy as well and brings a different look than some of the guys we've seen at the school in recent years."

Walker is the fifth commitment for Tech and its 2017 recruiting class. In what is expected to be a small class for the Bulldogs they could be nearly halfway done.
