Tech must find consistency

RUSTON -- Louisiana Tech held its second practice of the fall and second in just helmets with a two hour session at the Tech practice fields on campus Saturday evening.
Early on in Saturday's session the defense took advantage of an offense that was still installing a third of its play book and was still learning to keep a fast-paced, consistent style of play.
"I thought we definitely got better, worked through and improved on some things," said head coach Sonny Dykes. "We just need to keep our foot on the accelerator. That is what we talked to our team about [tonight] - we need to learn how to dominate in terms of not being satisfied when you make a play or two here or there. We get some players that all of a sudden start feeling good about themselves and when you make those plays you need to learn how to put [the opponent] away on the next play. We have to become a better football team in that regard. Just like anything else, you have to practice that and learn it. We have to do a better job of teaching that to our players."
Linebacker Chip Hester and defensive back Javontay Crowe both stood out in Saturday's practice, making plays as the offense looked to maintain a consistent level of play.
"Chip Hester is someone that did some good things today as well," Dykes said. "I am pleased with what I have seen out of Chip. He made a play today and got an interception. Javontay Crowe is a guy that is showing up around the ball a lot. Dave Clark had a good day as well. I saw a lot of guys on the defensive side make some plays today when the ball was in the air."
Once the offense regained its focus, it was able to make some plays later in the session with receiver Richie Casey impressing the coaching staff in his move to outside receiver.
"I was really pleased after watching the tape of yesterday's practice with the work of Richie Casey," said Dykes. "That was probably the best practice he has had out here. I thought he did some good things out here this afternoon as well. He made a move outside and I think he is more comfortable there. It fits his skills a little bit better [than inside receiver]."
Louisiana Tech will practice in helmets once more with a 6 p.m. session scheduled for Sunday while donning shoulder pads for the first time on Monday.
