Tech WR commit came back to football last year

Lafayette County coach Bobby Clark convinced Tech's latest commitment to play football last year after focusing on basketball as a sophomore.

Cualan Williams recently committed to Louisiana Tech over offers from Kent State and Louisiana-Monroe. The 6-foot-3 Stamps, AR native had recently attended a Louisiana Tech camp in Shreveport.

Lafayette County Coach Bobby Clark knows he has a special athlete in Williams. “I took the head coach job last season,” explained Clark. “Cualan (pronounced QUAY-luhn) didn’t play football the previous year, instead he focused on basketball. I talked him into playing football. It didn’t take much convincing. He wanted to play.”

Williams scored two touchdowns in his first game against Bearden. By week three, college coaches were taking notice.

Coach Clark says that two of the main things that they wanted to work on with Williams were route running and going up to get the ball. He ended up with 13 touchdowns last season. “I don’t know how many two point conversions he had,” added Clark. “It’s hard for a high school player at this level to cover him.”

This season, Lafayette County will be breaking in a new quarterback. The Cougars have another receiver with length in 6-foot-2 receiver Wayne Cornish, who Clark said had several TD catches called back due to various penalties, lining up opposite Williams.

The presence of Cornish on the other side helps keep the defense honest. “They will still try to press him to try and take away the slant,” admitted Clark, “with a safety helping out over the top.”

Good luck to any defense trying to stop Williams in 2016. They are going to need it.
