Three Keys to Victory: UTEP

Start Fast: UTEP has yet to win a game in 2017, but they have played well in the first quarter of games. Defensively they have only given up 51 points in the opening period of play. Tech has to start fast so that this hapless UTEP team has no hope of capturing their first victory. J’Mar Smith played well a week ago and will need to continue that solid play Saturday afternoon.

Play within Yourself: It’s no secret at this point; Tech must win out in order to secure a bowl berth. The ‘Dogs will undoubtedly feel some added pressure knowing that this is a must win game. Tech must be able to control their jitters and emotions in order to play solid in all three phases of the game. Tech has battled inconsistencies on offense throughout the year and at this point it’s safe to say the unit is what it is. Bulldog fans aren’t going to see juggernaut numbers week after week as has been the case for many years. Blake Baker’s Bulldog defense needs to play sound fundamental football if Tech is going to escape El Paso with a victory.

Win the Turnover Battle: The key to winning any road game is to win the turnover battle. While UTEP hasn’t won a game thus far, the Miners do a nice job of protecting the football. They have only turned the ball over 15 times in 2017 and are only minus four in turnover differential. Tech, on the other hand, is plus six in turnover differential. It will be essential that Tech does not lose the turnover battle Saturday if they want to take a step towards their fourth consecutive bowl game.
