Louisiana Tech (19-18, 9-6) had its best conference outcome of the year when it swept FIU at JC Love Field this weekend.
The Bulldogs are now 9-6 in Conference USA play, which is good for 4th place at the halfway point.
Let's take a look at some Stats that Stood Out for the 'Dogs this weekend.
Stat that Stood Out #1 - Hitters Battle in the Box
The Bulldogs struck out a combined 23 times in losses to UL-Lafayette and UL-Monroe on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively.
Against the Panthers this weekend, the 'Dogs battled in the box throughout the weekend.
Tech hitters only struck out 16 times in 115 plate appearances. That's a 13.5% K rate, which is a substantial improvement over the 28.3% K rate in the two midweek losses.
Put the ball in play and good things will happen.
Stat that Stood Out #2 - Pitchers Pound the Strike Zone
Throwing strikes isn't as simple as it seems, but it's no secret that it leads to success on the mound.
Jonathan Fincher has walked only 2.4 hitters per 9 IP across 291 innings in his Tech career.
He's an all-timer, and that's a big reason why. The Shreveport native relentlessly pounds the strike zone every time he takes the mound.
Fincher and his teammates relentlessly pounded the strike zone against FIU hitters all weekend. The Tech pitching staff only walked 6 hitters in 115 plate appearances in the 3-game sweep.
That's 5.2% BB/HBP rate. Outstanding.
Keep in mind, this is an FIU team that came into the Love Shack with 6 regulars hitting over .300 while averaging nearly 7 runs per game.
Great work on the mound. Kudos to Cooper Fouts and Matt Miller for having the staff prepared.
