Tech Beats UTSA, Becomes Bowl Eligible

Defense ruled for Louisiana Tech Saturday night as they defeated UTSA 20-6.

The Bulldog defense stymied the Roadrunners all night surrendering only 201 total yards and two field goals. Postgame when speaking about the play of his defense, Tech head coach Skip Holtz said, "They just kept banging that rock. It was our best effort of the year. I mean, statistically, just the togetherness, the energy, the way everybody was into it." Tech held UTSA quarterback Dalton Sturm to only 91 yards through the air.

Offensively quarterback J'Mar Smith struggled against the nation's sixth ranked defense. Smith completed only 7/21 throws for 101 yards and an interception. However, Smith did contribute one rushing touchdown and made a couple of key throws late in the game to propel Tech to victory.

Statistically, Boston Scott led the Bulldog offense with 138 yards on 20 carries and a touchdown. Rhashid Bonnette led all receivers with four catches for 64 yards. Defensively Russell Farris led the 'Dogs with 13 tackles including two for loss. Jaylon Ferguson had his best game of the year collecting one and a half sacks. Amik Robertson and Darryl Lewis both collected interceptions in the victory.

Tech ends the regular season at 6-6 (4-4) and now will await their bowl fate. When speaking about his team's fate being in the hands of the bowl committee, Holtz said, "I really want to see these seniors have an opportunity to enjoy a bowl game. They have worked extremely hard." The 17 seniors that played their final game in Joe Aillet Stadium Saturday night have piled up 33 victories in their four years.
