Three Keys to Victory: Mississippi State

Slow down Nick Fitzgerald:

In 2016, Nick Fitzgerald was the Mississippi State offense. Fitzgerald threw for 2,423 yards and ran for another 1,375 to go with his 37 total touchdowns. Not bad, huh? In week one against an outmatched Charleston Southern team, Fitzgerald did much of the same -- combining for 280 yards and three touchdowns. The Tech defense looked much better in week one than a year ago, but will it be enough against a much more potent Mississippi State offense. Stopping Fitzgerald is near impossible, but the Bulldog defense will have to find a way to at least slow him down Saturday night in order to give themselves a chance to win the game. Fitzgerald completed just 54% of his passes in 2016, so the game plan will be to make him win with his arm. If the ‘Dogs can do that, they should be able to find success.

Win the Turnover Battle:

Winning the turnover battle was a key in week one and this week is no different. Tech turned the ball over three times in week one. First game jitters or not, they will have to clean the ball security issues up this week. Mississippi State is currently a touchdown favorite, so winning the turnover battle, as well as stealing a special teams/defensive touchdown or two, will go a long way in pulling off the upset.

Establish the Run Game Early:

Jarred Craft and Boston Scott combined for 141 yards on 25 carries with two touchdowns in week one. During the first half, Tech’s offensive line had issues creating holes for “The Factory,” especially on the right side. As Tech wore down Northwestern State, running lanes opened up and Tech found success moving the chains on the ground. The ‘Dogs will need to establish its run game early to allow for J’Mar Smith to settle in at quarterback and lead the offense down the stretch. Craft is Mr. Consistency while Scott is a home-run hitter, but both will play a huge role Saturday night.
