Limit the Turnovers: Two games into the 2017 campaign, it is no secret that Louisiana Tech is starting off with a turnover problem. In two games the ‘Dogs have had six turnovers, with five of those by quarterback J’Mar Smith. The Bulldogs will need to clean this up in week three. The turnovers played a pivotal role in Saturday night’s game against Mississippi State, which was played in front of the second largest crowd in Joe Aillet Stadium history. If Smith and company can limit the turnovers against the Hilltoppers, expect the ‘Dogs to win.
Get the Wide Receivers Involved: Throughout the first two games of 2017 Jarred Craft and Boston Scott have carried the load offensively for the Bulldogs. Outside of Marcus Gaines having three catches for 104 yards on Saturday night, the wide receivers have been kept in check. Tech will look to get Teddy Veal, Marlon Watts, and the rest of the Bulldog receiving core involved in a big way against Western Kentucky. The Tech receivers have all the tools needed to do damage; it’s just a matter of them getting on the same page as J’Mar Smith to help get things going in the right direction.
Shut down the Run Game: Through two games the Western Kentucky offense has had a difficult time getting their run game going. Averaging only 1.9 yards per carry, it’s clear the defending Conference USA Champion have some issues. Mix that in with having only six yards rushing against Illinois Saturday night and the Hilltoppers are looking for answers. If Tech can go into Bowling Green and shut down the run game, it will put a lot of pressure on quarterback Mike White and his inexperienced receivers who have also been having struggles of their own.
