According to Thayer Evans of Sports Illustrated, Louisiana Tech offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Tony Petersen is headed to East Carolina.

When Holtz took over playcalling duties from Petersen two seasons ago many thought Petersen would look for another job where he could call the plays.

Rattay to coach QBs could be OC

Sources tell BleedTechBlue.com former Tech QB and current outside receivers coach Tim Rattay has been promoted to quarterbacks coach. Head coach Skip Holtz plans to hold on to the offensive coordinator title until he has his staff in place. Rattay will be a strong candidate for the offensive coordinator position as well.

“Tim Rattay rings a vast amount of experience, knowledge and expertise to the quarterback position,” Holtz said in a release from Tech. “His passion and love for this University and desire to coach the quarterbacks at his alma mater made this an obvious and great choice for us. I have been really impressed with the work he has done the last three years. His knowledge, energy and demeanor as a coach has really stood out.”

“I am extremely excited to coach the quarterbacks,” Rattay said in the same release. “It is something that I have wanted to do for a long time, especially at Louisiana Tech. I really appreciate Coach Holtz giving me the opportunity to do this. I have enjoyed the last three years with the receivers, they are a great group of guys, but I am looking forward to this opportunity with the quarterbacks.”

Rattay is someone to keep an eye on as the next head coach at Tech when Holtz moves on and a promotion to offensive coordinator seems like the next step for the former NFL quarterback.

What about WRs?

Tech inside receivers coach and recruiting coordinator Joe Sloan will likely be a candidate for the outside receivers position. Although Sloan is an ECU alum, he and Holtz know what one another are thinking and we do not expect him to follow Petersen.

Former Tech offensive lineman and current Cal assistant Jacob Peeler is a dynamo recruiter. He would be a great fit but many believe he is tied in closely with Sonny Dykes.

Former Tech QB Matt Kubik was just hired at ULM to be their offensive coordinator, it's doubtful he'd come to be the WRs coach at Tech.

Trey Haverty played WR at Texas Tech and coached them at TCU before going to his alma mater as a linebackers coach and was recently let go with the majority of the Texas Tech defensive staff. He would be worth talking to.

Former North Texas running backs coach Tommy Perry is an East Texas recruiting dynamo and could be an inside receivers coach should Sloan get the outside receivers job.
